  40. STORAGE
  41.  
  42.      Griseofulvin tablets, capsules, and oral suspension should be stored at
  43. room temperature in tightly closed containers.  This medication should never
  44. be frozen.
  45.  
  46. USES
  47.  
  48.      This medication is used to treat certain fungal infections of the skin
  49. and nails.  Griseofulvin prevents the multiplication of susceptible fungi.  It
  50. also enters the cells of skin, hair, and nails, and protects them from fungal
  51. invasion.
  52.  
  53. TREATMENT
  54.  
  55.      In order to avoid stomach irritation, you can take griseofulvin with food
  56. or milk.
  57.      The oral suspension form of this medication should be shaken well, just
  58. before measuring each dose.  The contents tend to settle on the bottom of the
  59. bottle, so it is necessary to shake the container to evenly distribute the
  60. ingredients and equalize the doses.  Each dose should then be measured
  61. carefully with a specially designed, 5-ml measuring spoon.  An ordinary
  62. kitchen teaspoon is not accurate enough.
  63.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  64. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  65. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  66. not double the next dose.
  67.      It is important to continue to take this medication for the entire time
  68. prescribed by your doctor (perhaps six months or more), even if the symptoms
  69. disappear before the end of that period.  If you stop taking this drug too
  70. soon, resistant fungi are given a chance to continue growing, and your
  71. infection could recur.
  72.  
  73. SIDE EFFECTS
  74.  
  75.      Minor.
  76.  
  77.      Diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, insomnia, nausea, stomach upset,
  78. and vomiting.  These side effects should disappear in several days, as your
  79. body adjusts to the medication.
  80.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down awhile; get up slowly.
  81.      This medication can increase your sensitivity to sunlight.  You should
  82. therefore avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps.  Wear protective
  83. clothing and sunglasses, and use an effective sunscreen.
  84.  
  85.      Major.
  86.  
  87.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  88. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  89. confusion, itching, skin rash, sore throat, or a tingling of the hands or
  90. feet.

  92. INTERACTIONS
  93.  
  94.      Griseofulvin interacts with other types of medication.
  95.      1. It can increase the effects of alcohol, resulting in flushing and an
  96. increased heart rate.
  97.      2. Barbiturates can cause a decrease in the effectiveness of
  98. griseofulvin.
  99.      3. Griseofulvin can decrease the effectiveness of oral anti-coagulants
  100. (blood thinners, such as warfarin).
  101.      Before starting to take griseofulvin, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you
  102. are already taking any of these other medications.
  103.  
  104. WARNINGS
  105.  
  106.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  107. any medications, especially to griseofulvin, penicillins, cephalosporin
  108. antibiotics, or penicillamine.
  109.      * Before starting to take griseofulvin, be sure to tell your doctor if
  110. you now have, or if you have ever had, liver disease, porphyria, or systemic
  111. lupus erythematosus (SLE).
  112.      * If this drug makes you dizzy, do not take part in any activity that
  113. requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating potentially dangerous
  114. equipment.
  115.      * Observe good hygiene to control the source of infection and to prevent
  116. reinfection.
  117.      * Concurrent use of an appropriate topical antifungal medication may be
  118. necessary to help clear the infection.
  119.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Extensive studies in
  120. pregnant women have not yet been completed, but birth defects have been
  121. reported in animals whose mothers received large doses of griseofulvin during
  122. pregnancy.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  It is
  123. not known whether or not griseofulvin passes into breast milk.
